WHAT IS A PHOTOFACIAL?
Photofacials may be either light emitting diode (LED) or intense pulsed light (IPL) based treatments used for a variety of skin conditions. LED photofacials are predominantly used to treat acne by killing bacteria under the skin and to boost collagen. IPL photofacials are a type of laser treatment that is predominantly used for reducing redness. They are usually painless and can improve the overall texture and appearance of your skin.
An IPL photofacial targets brown spots, broken capillaries or overall redness, called diffused facial redness. The number of IPL photofacials you need will vary depending on the condition you are treating, the results you want, and how your skin responds.
CAN PHOTOFACIALS HELP WITH ACNE SCARRING?
Yes. The treatment boosts collagen and repairs damaged skin tissue. After a treatment, your skin’s renewal system creates more collagen and lessens the appearance of acne scars.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS OF PHOTOFACIALS ARE RECOMMENDED?
Three to six treatments are generally recommended for an IPL treatment. Each treatment lasts 30 to 40 minutes. It can take up to three to four weeks for your skin to complete a regenerative cycle.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS FROM PHOTOFACIALS?
IPL photofacials may cause some burning sensation or redness to the skin. It doesn’t feel any worse than a sunburn, but don’t expect to want to be out in public directly after a treatment. LED photofacials are gentler, and there is little to no downtime after a treatment. Photofacials are light based treatments used for a variety of skin conditions. They can be expensive, but can improve the overall appearance of your skin. Expect to see results in less than a month.
A WORD OF CAUTION
If you are coming off of aggressive acne treatments such as isotretinoin, wait at least six months before treating your skin with a photofacial. Skin needs time to recuperate and heal from acne treatments before any aggressive laser procedure is performed. Treating skin with a photofacial too soon can cause permanent scarring and hyperpigmentation.
